For Krakow, peak demand falls in Jul–Aug · Holidays, when fares and hotel rates run highest — book 3–4 months ahead if travelling then. The shoulder window (Apr–Jun · Sep–Oct) is the sweet spot for most visitors: prices ease noticeably while conditions stay favourable. The cheapest fares cluster in Nov–Mar, and flying Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday typically shaves a further 10–15% off the average ticket price.

Krakow is Poland's former royal capital, spared the wholesale destruction that levelled Warsaw during the Second World War, leaving its medieval centre remarkably intact. The Rynek Glowny, Krakow's main square, is the largest medieval town square in Europe, anchored by the 14th-century Cloth Hall and St Mary's Basilica, whose trumpeter still sounds an hourly call from the tower in memory of a 13th-century warning of a Tatar invasion. Wawel Castle, the former seat of Polish kings, overlooks the Vistula River from a hilltop just south of the Old Town. With a population of around 800,000, Krakow also serves as the closest major city to the Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial and museum, about an hour and a half away.
Krakow John Paul II International Airport, about 11km west of the city centre, is the main gateway, with a direct train into Krakow's main station in around 20 minutes. Use the flight search above to compare current fares into Krakow.
Krakow has a continental climate with warm summers and cold, often snowy winters. Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) bring milder, more comfortable temperatures and noticeably thinner crowds in the Old Town and main square. December brings Christmas markets to the Rynek Glowny that draw their own seasonal visitors.
Krakow's Old Town and Wawel Castle area are highly walkable, with most major sights within a comfortable 20-minute walk of each other. Trams cover the wider city efficiently for destinations further out, including the former Jewish quarter of Kazimierz, a short ride or walk south of the centre.
The Old Town puts you steps from the Rynek Glowny and Wawel Castle, though prices and crowds both run highest here. Kazimierz, the historic Jewish quarter, offers a quieter, increasingly trendy alternative with excellent restaurants and bars, a short walk or tram ride from the centre. Podgorze, across the river, provides a more local, budget-friendly base.
Three days covers the Old Town, Wawel Castle, and Kazimierz comfortably, with a fourth day needed for a day trip to Auschwitz-Birkenau.
About an hour and a half by car or organised tour bus, making it a feasible (though emotionally demanding) day trip from the city.
Unlike Warsaw, Krakow's historic centre largely escaped major wartime destruction, which is why so much of its medieval architecture remains original rather than reconstructed.
A direct train runs from the airport into Krakow's main station in around 20 minutes, departing frequently throughout the day.
Yes, significantly more affordable than Western European capitals for both dining and accommodation.
