London is the capital of England and the United Kingdom, and one of the world's most visited cities, built around two thousand years of continuous history along the River Thames. The Elizabeth Tower, home to the bell known as Big Ben, finished a five-year restoration in August 2022 that returned its clock face to its original Victorian colours. London is also home to the oldest underground railway network in the world, the London Underground, which first opened in 1863. London is served by six airports, but most international visitors arrive at Heathrow (LHR), about 14 miles west of central London and directly connected to the city by the Piccadilly Underground line as well as the faster Heathrow Express rail service. Gatwick, Stansted, and Luton handle a large share of European budget routes, each with direct rail links into central London. If you're arriving from continental Europe, the Eurostar train connects Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam directly to St Pancras International in about two to three hours. London's weather is famously changeable but rarely extreme: mild summers average around 23°C (73°F) and winters rarely drop below freezing, though rain is a possibility in any month. Late spring (May-June) and early autumn (September) tend to offer the best balance of decent weather and manageable crowds. July and August are peak tourist season with the longest queues at major attractions, while December brings Christmas markets and lights but also the coldest, darkest days. Pack a waterproof layer regardless of when you go.
The London Underground (the Tube) and the Overground rail network cover the city extensively, and an Oyster card or contactless bank card gives you the cheapest fares with automatic daily price capping. Central London is also very walkable between major landmarks — Westminster, Trafalgar Square, and Covent Garden are all within a comfortable walk of each other. Black cabs and ride-hailing apps are widely available but considerably more expensive than public transport for longer journeys. Buses are slower but offer some of the best free sightseeing in the city, particularly the routes that cross the Thames.
Westminster and South Bank put you within walking distance of Big Ben, the London Eye, and the Thames, but command premium prices. Covent Garden and Soho offer a livelier base near theatres and restaurants. Four to five days lets you cover the major landmarks, fit in a museum or two, and explore at least one neighbourhood beyond the centre without feeling rushed. A long weekend (3 days) is workable but tight.
