Fiumicino Airport (FCO), about 30km southwest of the city, is Rome's main international gateway, with the Leonardo Express train running direct to Termini Station in roughly 32 minutes. Ciampino Airport (CIA), closer to the city, handles many European budget carriers and connects via bus to Termini. Termini itself is Rome's central transport hub, linking trains, the Metro, and buses citywide, and is also where most high-speed rail connections to Florence, Venice, and Naples depart. Rome's climate brings hot, often crowded summers, with July and August regularly passing 32°C (90°F) and many ancient sites offering little shade. Spring (April-May) and autumn (late September-October) bring milder temperatures and noticeably thinner crowds at the Colosseum and Vatican. Winter is mild by northern European standards and the quietest time to visit, though some outdoor sites have reduced hours.
Rome's historic centre is best explored on foot — many of its biggest sights, including the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, and Piazza Navona, sit within a relatively compact area unsuitable for cars due to narrow medieval streets. The Metro has only two main lines and doesn't reach every historic corner, since deep excavation risks disturbing archaeological sites, but it's useful for longer hops like Termini to the Colosseum. Buses fill the gaps the Metro misses. Cobblestones are everywhere, so comfortable shoes matter more in Rome than in most cities.
The area around the Pantheon and Piazza Navona puts you in the heart of the historic centre, walkable to most major sights but at a premium price.
