Seville is the capital of Andalusia in southern Spain, a city shaped by nearly 800 years of Moorish rule before its reconquest in 1248. The Real Alcazar, a royal palace complex blending Mudejar, Gothic, and Renaissance styles, remains in active royal use today, making it the oldest royal palace still in use in Europe. Seville Cathedral, built on the site of a former mosque, houses the tomb of Christopher Columbus and its bell tower, the Giralda, was originally the mosque's minaret. With a metro population of around 1.5 million, Seville is also widely considered the birthplace of flamenco and one of the hottest major cities in Europe during summer, connected internationally through Seville Airport.
Seville Airport (SVQ), about 10km northeast of the city centre, is the main gateway, connected by a dedicated airport bus reaching the city centre in around 35 minutes. Seville is one of the hottest cities in Europe in summer, with July and August regularly exceeding 38°C (100°F) and making midday sightseeing genuinely uncomfortable. Spring (March-May) and autumn (October-November) bring far more pleasant temperatures and coincide with major events like Semana Santa (Holy Week) and the Feria de Abril, both worth experiencing but also drawing larger crowds and higher prices.
Seville's historic centre, including the Real Alcazar, Cathedral, and Santa Cruz quarter, is compact and walkable, though the summer heat makes early morning and evening exploration far more comfortable than midday. The city is notably bike-friendly with a well-developed network of bike lanes, and a tram and Metro line cover longer distances for those who'd rather not walk in the heat.
Santa Cruz, the old Jewish quarter, puts you steps from the Real Alcazar and Cathedral in a maze of narrow, atmospheric streets.
