Narita International Airport (NRT), about 60km east of central Tokyo, handles many international long-haul flights, connected by the Narita Express train reaching the city centre in around 60 minutes. Haneda Airport (HND), much closer at around 14km from the centre, handles a growing share of international routes alongside most domestic flights, with a Monorail or train connection reaching central Tokyo in around 30 minutes. Spring (late March-April) brings cherry blossom season, among the most popular times to visit despite unpredictable exact timing and the largest crowds. Autumn (October-November) offers similarly comfortable temperatures with colourful foliage and somewhat thinner crowds. Summer (June-August) is hot and humid, while winter is cold but generally dry and clear.
Tokyo's rail and subway network is extensive, punctual, and the primary way most visitors and residents get around, with a rechargeable IC card (Suica or Pasmo) covering nearly all trains, subways, and buses. Districts like Shibuya, Shinjuku, and Asakusa are each individually walkable once you arrive, even though the city as a whole is vast and spread across many distinct neighbourhoods.
Shinjuku offers excellent transport connectivity and a mix of business and nightlife districts, a practical base for first-time visitors. Shibuya puts you near the famous crossing with strong shopping and youth culture, while Asakusa offers a more traditional, temple-adjacent atmosphere at generally lower prices.
