Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE), about 8km north of the historic centre on the mainland, is the main gateway. From the airport, a direct boat (Alilaguna) or a bus-plus-vaporetto (water bus) combination reaches the historic centre, since no roads lead directly into Venice proper. Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) bring milder weather and avoid the most intense summer crowds, though Venice rarely feels uncrowded in its central areas regardless of season. Acqua alta, seasonal high tide flooding in St Mark's Square and other low-lying areas, occurs mainly between autumn and early spring and is worth checking forecasts for if visiting in that window. Carnival, in February, brings elaborate costumes and crowds of its own.
Venice's historic centre is entirely car-free and must be explored on foot or by boat. Vaporetti (water buses) run set routes along the major canals and are the main public transport option, while gondolas are a scenic but expensive tourist experience rather than practical transport. Walking between sights involves frequent bridges and narrow alleys, so comfortable shoes and a tolerance for getting briefly lost are both useful.
San Marco, around St Mark's Square, puts you in the most central, monument-dense part of the city, though it's also the most expensive and crowded.
