Metro line 8 connects the airport directly to the city centre, and an Aeropuerto Express bus runs around the clock to central points including Atocha station. Atocha itself is Madrid's main rail hub, with high-speed AVE trains reaching Barcelona in under three hours and Seville in under two and a half. Madrid's continental climate brings genuinely hot summers, with July and August regularly exceeding 35°C (95°F) and many locals leaving the city in August. Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) bring far more comfortable temperatures and full restaurant terraces without the summer extremes. Winters are cold by Spanish standards but mild compared to northern Europe, and rarely see snow in the city itself.
Madrid's Metro covers the city extensively and is one of the most efficient ways to get around, with trains running frequently and signage in both Spanish and English. The historic centre, including Sol, Gran Vía, and the areas around the Royal Palace, is highly walkable. Madrid also runs notably later than most European capitals — dinner reservations after 9pm are normal, and the Metro runs until around 1:30am most nights.
Sol and Gran Vía put you in the absolute centre, walkable to the Prado, Retiro Park, and the Royal Palace, though prices and noise both run higher here.
