Why the headline rate is not the price

Two hotels showing the same nightly rate can differ by a wide margin once everything is counted. These are the charges that move the total, and most of them are visible before you book if you know to look.

1

Taxes and city levies

Some markets quote rates excluding tax, and many cities add a per-person, per-night tourist tax collected at the property. It rarely appears in the headline figure and is often payable in cash on arrival.

2

Resort and facility fees

A mandatory daily charge, most common in the US, Caribbean and parts of the Middle East. It is not optional and not always included in the compared rate, so it can turn the cheapest-looking option into the most expensive.

3

What the rate includes

Room-only against breakfast-included is often a smaller gap than buying breakfast separately. For a family on a longer stay, half board can beat a cheaper room-only rate outright.

4

Cancellation terms

Non-refundable rates typically save around a tenth to a fifth. That is worth taking only when the dates genuinely cannot move — otherwise a flexible rate you can rebook downward is usually the better trade.

Location is a price decision, not just a preference

A cheaper room further out stops being cheaper once you add two transfers a day for a family, or taxis after the metro stops. Before booking on price alone, check the walking distance to the places you will actually spend time, whether the nearest station runs late enough for your return flight, and whether the area is somewhere you are comfortable arriving at night.

On guest scores: a 9.2 from 40 reviews and a 8.6 from 4,000 are not comparable. Read the recent reviews rather than the average — renovations, ownership changes and construction next door show up there long before they move the score.

When to book

Hotel pricing behaves differently from airfares. Inventory is far larger and rates move much later, so booking a year out rarely helps. What matters more is the event calendar: a city with a major conference, festival or match on your dates will be expensive whenever you book, and shifting by a few days often saves more than any amount of early booking. Business cities are cheapest at weekends; leisure destinations are cheapest midweek.

Common questions about booking hotels

Is it cheaper to book direct or through a comparison site?

Compare first, then check the hotel’s own site before confirming. Chains often match or beat the rate for loyalty members and may add breakfast or a late checkout. Independents sometimes price lower direct because they avoid commission. The comparison tells you what the market rate is; direct is where you occasionally beat it.

What is a resort fee and can I avoid it?

A compulsory daily charge covering things like pool access, gym and Wi-Fi, whether or not you use them. You cannot decline it, so the only way to avoid it is to book a property that does not levy one — which is why comparing the total rather than the nightly rate matters.

Should I take the non-refundable rate?

Only when the dates are fixed and the saving is meaningful. If your flights are on a flexible fare, matching that flexibility on the hotel is usually worth the difference.

Do I pay now or at the property?

Pay-at-property keeps the money in your account longer and avoids paying a foreign exchange spread twice. Prepaid rates are sometimes cheaper, but if the hotel charges in its local currency, decline any offer to be billed in your home currency — that conversion is almost always worse than your bank’s.
